ATLANTA, GEORGIA, November 13, 2013 – The Metro Atlanta Chamber named Patientco, an Atlanta-based healthcare payments technology company, as their 2013 Healthcare IT Start-Up Company of the Year. The Phoenix Award was presented to CEO, Bird Blitch, at Tuesday’s Health IT Leadership Summit at the Fox Theater.

Bird Blitch accepts Patientco's Start-Up of the Year Award.“We are honored to be recognized as one of the leading Healthcare IT companies in Atlanta with such a prestigious award.  It’s further validation that we are doing meaningful work by simplifying how patients understand, manage, and pay their healthcare bills in a way that benefits both patients and providers,” remarked Blitch.

This year’s Phoenix awards were presented by David Hartnett, Vice President, Bioscience & Health IT Industry Development for the Metro Atlanta Chamber and co-founder of the Health IT Leadership Summit.  The Awards were given in four categories: Startup Company of the Year; Emerging Company of the Year; Community Leader of the Year; and University Advancement of the Year.

“Our MAC Phoenix Awards recipients represent all that Atlanta has to be incredibly proud of when it comes to excellence in health IT. These companies and leaders are on the leading edge of health IT developments and innovations that will transform our health care system and vastly improve our quality of life. They are truly companies and individuals to watch and they summarize why Georgia remains the nation’s health IT capital,” said Hartnett.

The Phoenix Awards, given annually in conjunction with the Health IT Leadership Summit, recognize excellence in individuals and companies. The Metro Atlanta Chamber created the awards to recognize the major role the Healthcare IT industry plays in Georgia’s economy. The Healthcare IT industry in Georgia leads the nation with more than 250 companies and over 30,000 jobs. The top nine Atlanta Healthcare IT companies report more than $4 billion in annual revenue.

“The success of Patientco launching out of the Advanced Technology Development Center (ATDC) is another prime example of Atlanta’s rapidly growing health IT entrepreneurial ecosystem,” said Hartnett.

Past winners of the Start-Up category include REACH Health, AirWatch, Monocle Health Data, and Greenway Medical.

“The Healthcare IT Leadership Summit is a great forum where industry leaders who are focused on all types of collaboration, innovation and disruption can come together to push Healthcare IT and Atlanta forward in ways that will make a positive impact on the future of healthcare for everyone.  We want to thank David Hartnett and The Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, as well as the Technology Association of Georgia’s Health Society, for the effort they have made to promote Atlanta as the nation’s Healthcare IT Capital,”  said Patientco’s Bird Blitch.
