HFMA ANI 2015 Conference Recap

Patientco is back from HFMA ANI and we consider it our best conference yet! We took 11 team members to Orlando for the 2015 Institute, including several members of our product team who were responsible for the newly redesignedPatientWalletSM .

Everyone from our CEO to our data scientist spoke with healthcare finance leaders and attended sessions to hear firsthand exactly what challenges the industry is facing over the next few years. Here are 3 recurring themes we heard throughout the show:

Increased Focus on the Patient Experience

Revenue cycle and the patient experience was a key learning track at this year’s conference and for good reason. Given changing reimbursement models and the oft-mentioned shift to healthcare consumerism, the consensus among providers is that an increased focus must be placed on guiding patients through the revenue cycle before, during, and after care. That said, healthcare finance leaders are now looking for specific strategies to accomplish this ambitious task. Over the next few months we are planning to release more resources to assist providers in building a patient-centric revenue cycle, adding to our current trove of webinars, blogs, and case studies.

Leveraging Technology to Achieve Cost Savings

In addition to assisting patients with understanding their financial obligations, providers also expressed interest in using technology to reduce overhead costs in the business office. Many functions that require either paper or manual tasks can now be done automatically through software, but achieving maximum efficiency ultimately depends on using this technology successfully. Instead of simply trying to replace people with machines, financial leaders should view technology as augmentative, enabling your business office staff to accomplish more in less time.

Optimism in the Face of Change

Everyone at HFMA ANI 2015 seemed to agree that it’s a challenging time to be responsible for financial success in healthcare delivery. Despite enormous industry changes and anticipated future challenges, there was a palpable feeling of optimism among conference participants. For those who are prepared, this is an opportunity to deliver healthcare at more affordable prices with greater focus on the patient experience. But it’s clear that the status quo is unsustainable and providers must innovate their people, processes, and technology now.
